Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 5: The Nephites know that what has been said from prophets of old and the prophets of their time is true. They believe on Jesus Christ and repent of their sins. Mormon writes the history of his people, Mormon being a true descendent of Lehi. Mormon compiles all of the books and histories together to form one book. He tells us that only a fraction of what has actually gone on among his people is included in the books that we have read so far. The records/histories are too large to include in the book that will later be known after Mormon, as the Book of Mormon. Mormon declares that God will gather his people together in the last days, and that the seed of Jacob will be gathered in from all the earth.

Chapter 6: 26 years after the birth of Jesus Christ and after the time that the Nephites had gathered together to unite against the robbers... they disperse to their own lands. They continue to farm and establish many new cities, highways, roads etc. They become a great civilization, and much peace is throughout the land. But as we have learned, the devil is always working... and within about 3 years he starts contentions among the people. People start to sin and do all sorts of evils.

But "...they did not sin ignorantly, for they knew the will of God..." (Third Nephi 6:18)

Prophets cry repentance unto the people, and many of them are murdered. Those who murdered the prophets conspire to take over the government and establish kings again throughout the land.

Chapter 7: The Chief Judge of the Land, Lachoneus (the son of Lachoneus) is murdered and the government is overthrown by those who had murdered the prophets. The people divide into tribes, consisting of their families, and close friends. Jacob, who is an antichrist becomes the King of a group or "League" of Tribes. Nephi goes throughout the land with much power and authority preaching repentance unto the people. Angels minister unto him on a daily basis and is given the power to raise his brother from the dead (who had been stoned by the murderers who overthrew the government). He heals many people and many people are baptized and testify of his great power and authority that was given to him, from God.
We learn that baptisim should be done by water (more particularly by immersion in water), "...as a witness an a testimony before God, and unto the people, that they have repented and received a remission of their sins." (Third Nephi 7:25)
Because our baptism sort of "seals the deal" that we have repented and will continue to follow his commandments... we must be clean an pure before we can be baptized, through repentance.

Chapter 8: 34 years after the birth of Jesus Christ, the people begin to doubt all of the signs that Samuel the Lamanite had spoken of.
But in the 34th year in the first month and the fourth day in that month arose a great storm. This storm got worse and worse until it sunk cities, like the city of Moroni into the depths of the sea, a mountain formed where the city of Moronihah had been, the earth was filled with lightnings, thunderings, tempests and earthquakes.
The people begin to cry out saying "...O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets..." (Third Nephi 8:25)
This great storm lasts for about 3 hours, and after it is finished, many people perish. The world is then covered in darkness for the space of 3 days.

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 1: 600 years have passes since the first part of the Book of Mormon where we read about Lehi and his family leaving Jerusalem. The Chief Judge of the Land is "Lachoneus". The people who believed on the words of Samuel continue in patience for the birth of Jesus Christ.
Remember that these events are happening simultaneously with the events that happen in the Bible. The difference is the record of the events that happened with the people of Jerusalem (middle east area) and the events that happened with the people of ancient America (North America to South America). All around 1 b.c.
The people that disagree with Samuel and chose to not listen to his words, start to rise up against the believers. They set a deadline for the things that Samuel had preached about. If the signs he spoke of do not happen by a certain day, then all the believers would be put to death.
                Nephi, the son of Helaman, for fear that death might come upon the believers prays fervently to God. He beheld a voice from heaven;
"Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show the world that I will fulfill all that which I have spoken by the mouths of my holy prophets" (Third Nephi 1:13)
A New Star arises, and despite the gradual fulfillment of the signs spoken of by Samuel the Lamanite... lying, deceit and murder abounds.

Chapter 2: Wickedness and all manner of Abominations increase throughout the land. The Nephites and the Lamanites that believe unite themselves to defend against the Gadianton Robbers who seek to destroy them. The converted Lamanites become white and are called the "Nephites"

Chapter 3: Giddianhi writes a letter to Lachoneus. In the letter Giddianhi demands that Lachoneus and his people give up their lands, cities and possesions, and if they don't they will be destroyed and the survivors will become slaves. He tells Lachoneus that if they give up all their possessions they can be part of the secret society known as the "Gadianton Robbers" and become their brothers.
Lachoneus is not threated by his letter, but counsels his people to be prepared for when Giddianhi and his people come to attack them. Lachoneus appoints Gidgiddoni to become a chief of the captains to prepare his people, should they go into battle.

Chapter 4: The Nephites take all of their possessions, cattle, grain, food...etc. and fortify one area heavily. They leave behind almost no provisions for the Gadianton Robbers. The Nephites essentially wait it out, until the Gadianton Robbers give up because of the want of food. The Gadianton Robbers are defeated, Giddianhi is slain and his successor  "Zemmarihah", who led the attack on the Nephites is hanged.
Interesting thought here; Zemmarihah is hanged from a tree and it says "...when they had hanged him until he was dead they did fell the tree to the earth..." (Third Nephi 4:28); the reason that this is interesting, is because... this is a custom in the middle east (as far as history goes) to cut the tree down, after you hang someone. As morbid as that might be, it is one evidence that can be used to prove that the Book of Mormon is in fact the word of God. How would have Joseph Smith known that? He didn't. Because the Book of Mormon was true and God called him to be a prophet. Pretty simple.

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 13: Samuel the Lamanite comes and prophesies about the destruction of the Nephites if they do not repent. He tells them that they reject and stone true prophets because they point out that they are in the wrong.
"...if a man shall come among you and shall say: Do this, and there is no iniquity; do that and ye shall not suffer... ye will receive him, and say he is a prophet...and ye will give unto him of your substance...because he speaketh flattering words unto you..." (Helaman 13:27-28)
Samuel tries to tell them that just because someone flatters you, you shouldn't believe their words. A prophet will always say things, that may offend people. Political correctness does not exist with God.

Chapter 14: Samuel the Lamanite predicts the coming of Jesus Christ. He preaches to the Nephites that He shall come in 5 years.
                He gives them signs to look for;
                1. 5 years until the birth of Jesus Christ (Helaman 14:2)
                2. Just before His birth, great lights will be visible in Heaven (Helaman 14:3)
                3. A new star shall arise (Helaman 14:5)
                4. A sign of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Helaman 14:14)
                5. After His death and Resurrection the sun, moon and stars will refuse to give light for 3 days,   and that earth will be filled with thundering and lightning. (Helaman 14:20)

Samuel urges the people to repent, for only through Jesus Christ can you return to live with God.

Chapter 15: The Lord chastises people because he loves them, just like He did to the Nephites. The Lamanites that have been converted are very strong members of the church. The Lord will show great mercy to the Lamanites and their descendents in the last days.

Chapter 16: Samuel the Lamanite continues his preaching from the walls of the city. Many believe on his words and are baptized unto repentance by Nephi. But many harden their hearts and begin to get angry with Samuel. Great signs start to appear before the people, many angels visit them... and yet they still harden their hearts and let Satan control them.
"...as many as there were who did not believe on the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither with their arrows." (Helaman 16:2)
And we end the Book of Helaman just 1 year before the birth of Christ (1 b.c). Samuel the Lamanite left and went back to his own country, never to be seen again.

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 9: Nephi identifies the murderer as Seantum. People think that Seantum and Nephi had been working together, or that Nephi agreed with murder. Nephi proves to the people that he is a prophet, by foretelling the future. Nephi is accepted by some as a prophet.

Chapter 10: The Lord God, gives the power to seal things on earth and in heaven, and to loose things on earth and in heaven; see Helaman 10:7. Essentially God has given Nephi the power to do temple ordinances. See Matthew 16:9; this is the same power that was given to Peter, James and John and also Joseph Smith. This power can only be given to those the Lord can trust. Nephi is carried away in spirit and teaches from congregation to congregation.

Chapter 11: The Lord is angered because of the wickedness of the people in the land, Nephi prays that he will use famine instead of war to cause that the people should humble themselves. Because of this famine, many people perish. Because of this may people begin to repent and Nephi asks God to bring rain. God brings rain and they begin to prosper again.

Chapter 12: Men are unstable, foolish and quick to do evil. God visits the world with many afflictions, death, terror and famine so that his children will remember him (Helaman 12:3).
"O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men..." (Helaman 12:4)
We learn that the earth rotates around the sun. (Remember that this was 7 years before Christ) - Helaman 12:15
We learn that whatever God wants, it is done.

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 5: Nephi and Lehi (the sons of Helaman) give up the judgment seat in order to preach. Because of their preaching they convert many people, but also anger others. Both of them are placed into prison, and a fire encircles them, but they are unharmed. A dark cloud overcomes the people nearby and the ground shakes violently. The people hear a voice that tells them to repent.
We learn that it is upon the "...rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds...it shall have no power over you..." (Helaman 5:12)

Chapter 6: The righteous Lamanites preach unto the wicked Nephites. The devil (Lucifer) guides the Gadianton Robbers in their murders and wickedness, they overtake the Nephite government.
Interesting thought: Helaman 6:10; talks about how Mulek and how the Lord had brought him to the land of the north and Lehi into the land of the south. So Mulek escaped Israel and was commanded to travel to the North America area. You can read about King Zedikiah (Mulek's father)and his escape in 2 Kings 26:4-7. See also: http://maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/publications/books/?bookid=71&chapid=806

Chapter 7: Nephi goes to preach in the North but it rejected. He returns to Zarahemla, he calls upon the people to repent or perish (Helaman 7:17-21)

Chapter 8: Corrupt judges seek to incite the people against Nephi. All prophets have testified of Christ. By inspiration Nephi announces the murder of the chief judge.

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 1: Pahoran the second becomes the chief judge of the land, but shortly after is murdered by Kiskumen. A fight between three sons pursues over the judgment seat; Pahoran, Paanchi and Pacumeni. Pacumeni ends up filling the judgment seat. Corinatumr leads an army to take Zarahemla, Corinatumr slays Pacumeni and Moonihah defeats the Lamanites to retake the land of Zarahemla.

Chapter 2: Helaman the second becomes the chief judge. Gadianton and his robbers lead the band of Kiskumen, Helemans servant ends up slaying Kiskumen, and the Gadianton band flees to the wilderness.

Chapter 3: Many of the Nehpites continue to migrate northward, they build houses of cement and keep many records. Tens of thousands are converted and baptized. The word of God spreads throughout the land and leads men to salvation. Nephi, the son of Helaman becomes the new chief judge. The Nephite people start to lift up their hearts in pride... "...pride which began to enter into the church- not into the church of God, but into the hearts of the people who professed to belong to the church of God." (Helaman 3:33)

Chapter 4: Nephite dissenters and the Lamanites join forces and take again, the land of Zarahemla. The Nephites are defeated becasuse of their wickedness. The church starts to dwindle and the people become weak like the Lamanites.

How the Book of Mormon came about: http://youtu.be/FMQEb9A9L2g

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 59: Moroni asks Pahoran to strengthen the forces of Helaman and his 2,000 Stripling Warriors. During which time the city of Nephihah was over-run by the Lamanites. When Moroni saw what had happened, and knew that the city was lost he became angered with the government because of their indifference over the liberty of their nation.

Chapter 60: Moroni writes a letter to the government of the Nephites, and complains to Pahoran (the chief judge) about the neglect of the armies on the governments part.
He writes to the government the following: "Can you think to sit upon your thrones in a state of thoughtless stupor (A state of near-unconsciousness or insensibility), while your enemies are spreading the work of death around you? Yea, while they are murdering thousands of your brethren? Yea, even they who have looked up to you for protection... yea, ye might have sent armies unto them, to have strengthened them, and have saved thousands of them from falling by the sword..." (Alma 60:7-8)
Then Moroni continues by pointing out all that they have done wrong...
"...ye have withheld your provisions from them..." (Alma 60: 9)
"...exceedingly great neglect toward them." (Alma 60:9)
"...ye have neglected them insomuch that the blood of thousands shall come upon your heads for vengeance... could ye suppose that ye could sit upon your thrones, and because of the             exceeding goodness of God ye could do nothing and he would deliver you? Behold if ye have       supposed this ye have supposed in vain." (Alma 60:10-11)
This is very important to remember, just because God is good... does not mean that he will deliver you out of any situation, just because of his love... He wants to see something on our part as well.
Moroni continues to address the government and at the same time answering a great question:
                Why does God permit suffering?
"For the Lord suffereth the righteous to be slain that his justice and judgment may come upon the wicked; therefore ye need not suppose that the righteous are lost because they are slain; but behold, they do enter into the rest of the Lord their God." (Alma 60:13)
Moroni also addresses the issue of slothfulness (aka laziness):
"...I fear exceedingly that the judgments of God will come upon this people, because of their exceeding slothfulness, yea even the slothfulness of our government, and their exceedingly great neglect towards their brethren, yea, towards those who have been slain." (Alma 60:14)
It is interesting that this was written roughly 62 years before Christ was born, and yet it seems like Moroni is speaking from the grave as far as the state of the world, but more specifically the current state of the United States Government. We can see that greed, power and laziness put us into this financial melt-down. Moroni even speaks of the want of power and authority of government officials..."...for we know not but what ye yourselves are seeking for authority. We know not but what ye are also traitors to your country" (Alma 60:18). Interesting? Right? Moroni, speaks for the grave here.
Moroni threatens to start a rebellion, if government does not strive to fix their ways. He tells them boldly... "...I do not fear your power, nor your authority; but it is my God whom I fear; and it is according to his commandments that I do take my sword to defend the cause of my country, and it is because of your iniquity that we have suffered so much loss." (Alma 60:28)
I think the lesson here is... FEAR GOD, NOT MAN!
Moroni closes his address, as any God fearing decent man would; "Behold, I am Moroni, your chief captain. I seek not for power, but to pull it down. I seek not for honor of the world, but for the glory of my God, and the freedom and welfare of my country, and thus I close mine epistle." (Alma 60:36)
Moroni was a great man, and truly has outlined what government should and should not do. He believes that power and authority and the want for them can lead to destruction. Fear not man, but do fear God.

Chapter 61: Pahoran writes back to Moroni and tells him of the insurrection and rebellion against the government, Pahoran asks for more military to protect against the rebels.

Chapter 62: Moroni marches forth to help in the aid of Pahoran in the land of Gideon. The king-men are put to death according to the law. Pahoran and Moroni are able to retake Nephihah, as they do this many Lamanites join the people of Ammon, Teancum slays Ammoron and inturn is slain himself. The Lamanites are driven from the land and the Nephites continue to grow in peace, they become rich and the church grows throughout the land.

Chapter 63: Helaman takes control of the ancient records and sacred records. Many of the Nephites build ships and travel northward (most likely traveling from South America to Central/North America - The descendents of the Native Americans.), Moronihah beats the Lamanites in battle.
