Leviticus 5-6
This year, I plan on reading the Old Testament of the Bible within the 2012 calendar year. Follow me on this journey! Please, if you have questions or comments... let me know!
Scripture Thought (What I Learned):
Chapter 5: Forgiveness comes through a
trespass offering
If you
swear or make an oath of something and then do not follow through with it, you
are sinning. (Leviticus 5:4). If you touch an unclean animal then you are also
sinning.
To be
forgiven of these sins you must first confess of them (Leviticus 5:5), then you
must bring a trespass offering, which is:
"...a female from the flock, a lamb or
a kid of the goats..." (Leviticus 5:6)
If you cannot bring the above, you
are required to bring "...two
turtledoves, or two young pigeons..." (Leviticus 5:7) - from here the
priest of the temple will "...wring
off his head from his neck... And he shall sprinkle the blood... on the side of
the altar... the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the
altar..." (Leviticus 5:8-9)
The second he would do the same
thing as a burnt offering, the priest will make atonement for him.
If you
are unable to bring turtledoves or pigeons you can bring, as a sin offering, a "...tenth part of an ephah of fine
flour..." (Leviticus 5:11)
The priest
will take the flour and burn it as an offering to the Lord.
If you sin
in ignorance, you must also make "amends" to the sin, through an offering
of a ram without blemish. This goes along with modern scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 131:6; "It is impossible
for a man to be saved in ignorance"
Chapter 6: Forgiveness through Atonement - Restitution
for Sin.
If you sin
against God or against any man then we are required to make a "restitution"
for that sin. For example if we stole $100
dollars from someone, we would need to confess the sin and then restore that $100
+ $20 (1/5) of the money, so $120 dollars total needs to be restored to the owner,
and then the person who sinned could go forth with his offering, so that the priests
could perform the ceremony of killing and eating of the animal as an "atonement"
for the mans sin.
Leviticus
6:4-5.
