Day 31; Alma 27-30

I am tackling the Book of Mormon in 60 days. My plan is to have the Book of Mormon studied by the end of 2011. During my challenge, I will post a daily blog of my reading, in this blog I will share with you... my thoughts, feelings, opinions and knowledge about the Book of Mormon. Do you have questions? Comments? Please... lets start a discussion. I would be more than happy to answer your questions, comments or concerns!

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 27: Ammon (commanded of by God) leads the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi to safety. Ammon meets with Alma and is exhausted over his much joy. The Nephites give Ammon and his people the land of Jershon, where they become the people of Ammon.
Interesting fact: Jershon in hebrew is the "land of our fathers" or "land of inheritence"

Chapter 28: The people of Ammon establish themselves in the land of Jershon and establish the church there. The Lamanites come up to the land of Nephi and 10's of thousands of them are slaughtered in a huge battle. Mourning is heard throughout the land. We learn that the wicked are consigned to a state of endless woe, while the righteous attain a state of never ending happiness.
This explains why there is so much division in the world today:
"...thus we see how great the inequality of man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil, which come by the cunning plans which he hath devised to ensnare the hearts of men" (Alma 28:13)

Chapter 29: Alma desires to cry repentance to all, he wishes to be an angel proclaiming the gospel throughout the land. The Lord has prepared and will prepare teachers for every nation and tongue (language). Alma's joy comes not from boasting, but from being an instrument in the hands of the Lord.

Chapter 30:

Korihor (the anti-christ) comes down to the land of Zarahemla to mock God and convince the people that there was no God and that the doctrines that they had been taught were false.  We learn that the nephites had no law "...against a man's belief; for it was strictly contrary to the commandments of God... for thus saith the scripture: Choose ye this day, whom ye will serve. Now if a man desired to serve God... it was his privilege to serve him; but if he did not believe in him there was no law to punish him." (Alma 30:7-9)
Essentially this is the LDS church position on other faiths, “We claim the privilege of worshipping almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may" (Articles of Faith #11)
Nevertheless, Korihor went about preaching his doctrine throughout all the land until he came to the land of Jershon. Alma and Korihor converse back and forth on the subject of God. Alma warns Korihor that if he continues, it would be likely that God would strike him dumb. He is struck dumb and then later takes back everything that he said, saying that he always knew there was a God.
