Day 43; Helaman 13-16

Day 43; Helaman 13-16

I am tackling the Book of Mormon in 60 days. My plan is to have the Book of Mormon studied by the end of 2011. During my challenge, I will post a daily blog of my reading, in this blog I will share with you... my thoughts, feelings, opinions and knowledge about the Book of Mormon. Do you have questions? Comments? Please... lets start a discussion. I would be more than happy to answer your questions, comments or concerns!

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 13: Samuel the Lamanite comes and prophesies about the destruction of the Nephites if they do not repent. He tells them that they reject and stone true prophets because they point out that they are in the wrong.
                "...if a man shall come among you and shall say: Do this, and there is no iniquity; do that and ye shall not suffer... ye will receive him, and say he is a prophet...and ye will give unto him of your substance...because he speaketh flattering words unto you..." (Helaman 13:27-28)
                Samuel tries to tell them that just because someone flatters you, you shouldn't believe their words. A prophet will always say things, that may offend people. Political correctness does not exist with God.

Chapter 14: Samuel the Lamanite predicts the coming of Jesus Christ. He preaches to the Nephites that He shall come in 5 years.
                He gives them signs to look for;
                1. 5 years until the birth of Jesus Christ (Helaman 14:2)
                2. Just before His birth, great lights will be visible in Heaven (Helaman 14:3)
                3. A new star shall arise (Helaman 14:5)
                4. A sign of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Helaman 14:14)
                5. After His death and Resurrection the sun, moon and stars will refuse to give light for 3 days,   and that earth will be filled with thundering and lightning. (Helaman 14:20)

                Samuel urges the people to repent, for only through Jesus Christ can you return to live with God.

Chapter 15: The Lord chastises people because he loves them, just like He did to the Nephites. The Lamanites that have been converted are very strong members of the church. The Lord will show great mercy to the Lamanites and their descendents in the last days.

Chapter 16: Samuel the Lamanite continues his preaching from the walls of the city. Many believe on his words and are baptized unto repentance by Nephi. But many harden their hearts and begin to get angry with Samuel. Great signs start to appear before the people, many angels visit them... and yet they still harden their hearts and let Satan control them.
                "...as many as there were who did not believe on the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither with their arrows." (Helaman 16:2)
                And we end the Book of Helaman just 1 year before the birth of Christ (1 b.c). Samuel the Lamanite left and went back to his own country, never to be seen again.
