Day 42; Helaman 9-12

I am tackling the Book of Mormon in 60 days. My plan is to have the Book of Mormon studied by the end of 2011. During my challenge, I will post a daily blog of my reading, in this blog I will share with you... my thoughts, feelings, opinions and knowledge about the Book of Mormon. Do you have questions? Comments? Please... lets start a discussion. I would be more than happy to answer your questions, comments or concerns!

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 9: Nephi identifies the murderer as Seantum. People think that Seantum and Nephi had been working together, or that Nephi agreed with murder. Nephi proves to the people that he is a prophet, by foretelling the future. Nephi is accepted by some as a prophet.

Chapter 10: The Lord God, gives the power to seal things on earth and in heaven, and to loose things on earth and in heaven; see Helaman 10:7. Essentially God has given Nephi the power to do temple ordinances. See Matthew 16:9; this is the same power that was given to Peter, James and John and also Joseph Smith. This power can only be given to those the Lord can trust. Nephi is carried away in spirit and teaches from congregation to congregation.

Chapter 11: The Lord is angered because of the wickedness of the people in the land, Nephi prays that he will use famine instead of war to cause that the people should humble themselves. Because of this famine, many people perish. Because of this may people begin to repent and Nephi asks God to bring rain. God brings rain and they begin to prosper again.

Chapter 12: Men are unstable, foolish and quick to do evil. God visits the world with many afflictions, death, terror and famine so that his children will remember him (Helaman 12:3).
"O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men..." (Helaman 12:4)
We learn that the earth rotates around the sun. (Remember that this was 7 years before Christ) - Helaman 12:15
We learn that whatever God wants, it is done.
