Day 58; Moroni 1-5

I am tackling the Book of Mormon in 60 days. My plan is to have the Book of Mormon studied by the end of 2011. During my challenge, I will post a daily blog of my reading, in this blog I will share with you... my thoughts, feelings, opinions and knowledge about the Book of Mormon. Do you have questions? Comments? Please... lets start a discussion. I would be more than happy to answer your questions, comments or concerns!

Scripture Thought (What I Learned):

Chapter 1: Moroni finishes the abridgement of the Jaredite records. Moroni tells his readers that he is alone and hiding from the Lamanites. The Lamanites will kill any Nephite that will not deny the Christ, Moroni affirms the readers that he will NOT deny the Christ. He writes this record, that it might be for the benefit of the Lamanites in the future. (the future generations of today)

Chapter 2: Moroni explains, that while Jesus visited the people in America, he gave the Apostles power to confer the Holy Ghost.

Chapter 3: Moroni explains the to be ordained in the office of elder or teacher in the church, it must be done through the laying on of hands.

Chapter 4: Moroni gives us the prayer for the Bread;
                "O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen." (Moroni 4:3)

Chapter 5: Moroni gives us the prayer for the Water;
                "O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine (water) to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of they Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen." (Moroni 5:2)
                Both of the prayers that Moroni wrote are ones that are very familiar to all LDS members. Every Sunday both prayers are read to bless the bread and water for the Sacrament. There are very few set prayers in the LDS church, this is one of the prayers whoever that must be read word for word.
                The structure of both prayers are very simple, they both comprise three main parts.
                1. The prayer consecrates the emblem and explains its significance. In this case, the bread and the water. The bread representing the flesh of Jesus Christ and the Water representing his blood, and that which was shed for us during his Atonement.
               2. Tells us our part of the deal, what we need to live up to, in order to fulfill our covenant.
                3. The Lord reveals his part of the covenant, and promises to bless us with his Spirit.
                We bless the emblems (the water and the bread) to remember the great events of the Lord's Atonement, his sacrifice for us. Our partaking of these emblems every Sunday is our way of telling the Lord that we will continue to live up the Covenant that we had promised during our baptism. If we live up to what we have promised, then we receive the great blessing of having the companionship of the Holy Ghost in our daily lives.
